Lead climbing is the most common style used when climbing outside. The climber wears a harness and has a partner to belay. The rope is not fixed through a top anchor, instead as the climber ascends the belayer pays rope out which the climber clips through protection points on the wall or cliff. When the climber falls they will drop until the last piece of protection clipped takes the impact. The requisite skill level for lead climbing and lead belaying is much higher than that of top roping, as is the inherent level of danger. For these reasons lead climbing requires extra training and is generally not taught to inexperienced climbers. The skills required are not difficult to master, but they do require confidence and "common sense".
Long and sustained, the lead roof at ECAT will take all that you have!

8 metres vertically and then 10 metres out horizontally, our lead roof provides perfect terrain for those wishing to hone their leading skills. Please note quick draws are insitu, however clients are required to provide their own rope and belay device.

Clients must also demonstrate lead climbing and belaying proficiency to our staff before using the wall.
